LAFC vs Portland Timbers Highlights

In their second match of the season, LAFC vs Portland Timbers was held at Providence Park on Sunday night and ended in a 2-1 win for the TImbers. Even with the northwest heatwave gone, the Portland Timbers have been on fire the past several weeks with their fifth win a row after tonight’s win against the Los Angeles FC.

Timbers forward Dairon Asprilla was able to start things off in the 21st minute where his team had a literal heads-up play off a corner kick. The corner kick bounced off to Timbers’ Felipe Mora who almost got his header intercepted by LAFC’s Raheem Edwards’ head, who then ricocheted it to Timbers midfielder Sebastián Blanco. Blanco tried to aim for the goal with a header but hit the crossbar which deflected toward Asprilla who charged on it for a header to the back of the net. An absolute tilting play for sure.

Not too shortly after, LAFC got some luck on their side when Portland messed up on a free kick by LAFC’s José Cifuentes. Blanco turned his back toward Cifuentes’ shot and ended up hitting the ball with the back of his own arm. Arango then made the penalty shot with swagger to equalize the game to 1-1.

In the 68th minute, Portland was able to retake the lead on a tremendous play. Timbers midfielder George Fochive scored on a header deflected off a cross from Blanco. Blanco has been on fire as of late, and seems to be 100% from his return from an ACL injury last season.

That was all she wrote for the rest of the match where LAFC could not regain any momentum. The mini win-streak has ended, but hopefully the Black & Gold can start another one up as we look forward to the next game at PayPal Park versus the San Jose Earthquakes on Saturday, September 25.
