LAFC vs Seattle Sounders – February 24, 2023

The Black and Gold were back in action in the LAFC vs Seattle Sounders match for their first regular season game of 2024. With 22,214 attendees at BMO Stadium, LAFC set an MLS record with their seventh season-opener win in a row.

LAFC goalkeeper Hugo Lloris was able to make seven saves and came out with a dub in his MLS debut. Lloris moved to the United States last December after spending 11 and a half seasons with Tottenham, including ten as the team’s primary goalkeeper.

“I think we could not start in a better way,” said Lloris. “The most important thing was to get the three points. We’re still working on our fitness level, and we suffered the last 20 minutes, but with the help of the crowd, we were able to win.”

“His first game was very clean,” said LAFC coach Steve Cherundolo. “Important saves. Just a steady rock for us. A sense of security when he’s there. He’s drawing back on years and years of experience playing at a high level. His decision-making on the ball is going to make us a lot better.”

LAFC’s Timothy Tillman put the home team first on the board just prior to halftime when she shot a right-footer off of teammate Omar Campos’ cross in his MLS debut. This was Campos’ first career assist.

After the break, Mateusz Bogusz doubled the lead in the 55th minute and he shot through Seattle Sounders goalkeeper Andrew Thomas. The Sounders were able to put themselves up on the board in the 73rd minute of the match due to Pedro de la Vega’s penalty kick.

LAFC will head onto Week 2 to face off against Real Salt Lake at America First Field on Saturday, March 2.
