LAFC vs LA Galaxy Highlights – April 16, 2023

For the first time in the LAFC vs LA Galaxy historic rivalry, the Los Angeles Football Club defeated the LA Galaxy on the road at Dignity Health Sports Park in a 3-2 victory. The end of an era has created the beginning of a new chapter in the book of El Tráfico.

Scoring his second and third goals of the 2023 MLS season, Carlos Vela secured a brace and tallied an assist in the win on Sunday. The first goal came in the 22nd minute of the match where Vela and José Cifuentes were trying to make a play near the penalty box. Vela passed it to Cifu who passed it back to Vela for a perfect left-footed strike, curving past LA Galaxy goalkeeper Jonathan Klinsmann and into the back of the net.

Vela’s second goal came after LAFC was awarded a penalty in the 66th minute following Galaxy defender Séga Coulibaly’s rough trip against Cifu inside the box. Vela’s assist was recorded on a corner kick to Ryan Hollingshead to give the Black and Gold a two goal lead at the 70’. The Captain now has a total of 10 goals and three assists across his 10 matches versus the LA Galaxy.

LAFC goalkeeper John McCarthy contributed big time as well, making three saves. He did let go of a couple throughout the game, giving one up to Galaxy’s Tyler Boyd who scored his first MLS goal, and the second to Mark Delgado in the 84th minute.

Although the momentum was swinging in the Galaxy’s way. McCarthy closed it up in stoppage time with a clutch save on Lucas Calegari. LAFC are still undefeated with a 5-0-2 record and 17 points.

The two clubs will meet again on July 4th, which will surely ignite some fireworks. Next up is an away game against Nashville SC at GEODIS Park on Saturday, April 26.
