LAFC vs Portland Timbers – April 27, 2024

Keeping their lossless streak of four games, the Black and Gold claimed victory in the LAFC vs Portland Timbers game with a 3-2 win. This was LAFC’s second matchup against the Timbers this 2024 MLS season, the first which ended in a 2-2 draw.

Midway into the first half, 2023 MLS Golden Boot Winner Denis Bouanga found the back of the net on a breakaway led by Timothy Tillman. Bouanga lobbed his kick over Timbers goalkeeper, and former LAFC teammate, Maxime Crépeau. After review, the play was called a handball foul on Tillman who slightly caught the ball with his left arm prior to his assist.

Not long before the halftime, the football gods did LAFC a favor as Bouanga struck a cross toward the center of the goal area. Timbers’ Kamal Miller unluckily slid into the ball and caused an own goal that put the Black and Gold up 1-0. LAFC was able to add one more on the board prior to the break when Tillman shot toward the far post which bounced toward the back of the net and doubled the lead. The goal was Tillman’s fourth of the season.

Portland Timbers forward Jonathan Rodríguez put his team back in the game with a score in the 65th minute as he shot a clean drive from the middle of the penalty arc, past LAFC goalkeeper Hugo Lloris. Just eight minutes later, Timbers’ Santiago Moreno scored with an assist from Claudio Bravo. The shot was initially deflected but found a way through Lloris to even the game.

In a nail biting second half stoppage, LAFC was able to attempt a shot on goal but the ball was blocked by Crepeau. Finding a way to Bouanga, who drove a right-footed shot to the back of the net, LAFC went up 3-2 to defeat the Timbers in spectacular fashion.

LAFC will travel up north to face off against the San Jose Earthquakes on Saturday, May 4. May the fourth be with the Black and Gold!
