LAFC vs San Jose Earthquakes – May 4, 2024
After going undefeated across the past five games, the Black and Gold unfortunately lost the streak in the 1-3 LAFC vs Colorado Rapids match on Saturday at Levi’s Stadium. Although one of the worst clubs in the MLS this season, the NorCal rivals took an early lead in which they held throughout the entire match.
Drawing first blood only five minutes into the match, the San Jose Earthquakes went on the board following a corner kick from Quakes midfielder Cristian Espinoza that was caught by the head of his teammate Rodrigues. LAFC, who had a great offensive presence with 70% of the possession in the first half, wasn’t able to find the back of the net to equalize the match before the break.
Espinoza was looking to create another play in the second half, and did so in the 55th minute when he found Amahl Pellegrino on a break past two Black and Gold jerseys. Pellegrino then went mono e mono with LAFC goalkeeper Hugo Lloris who crept up and attempted to grab the ball, but Pellegrino was able to easily pass Lloris up for an easy left-footed strike to double the lead.
LAFC wasn’t able to stop the bleeding. Shortly after, The Quakes succeeded on another corner kick that deflected off LAFC forward Denis Bouanga and past Lloris to put their team up 0-3. It wasn’t until the 69th minute when life struck into the SoCal club thanks to Cristian Olivera’s goal following a steal off of San Jose’s Vitor Costa.
The Quakes held their ground for the rest of the match, holding LAFC to their lone goal and with a season record of 4-4-3 and 15 points. LAFC will be back in action at BMO Stadium on Saturday, May 11 versus the Vancouver Whitecaps.
