LAFC vs San Jose Earthquakes – May 6, 2023

Fresh off their victory against The Quakes in the CCL semifinal series, the Black and Gold unfortunately came out one goal short on Saturday in the LAFC vs San Jose Earthquakes match at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara. Losing 2-1, the loss was LAFC’s first of the 2023 MLS season.

Quakes midfielder Cristian Espinoza kept his hot streak as April’s MLS player of the month, scoring the first goal of the game at the 8 minute mark. The Argentinian scored 5 goals last month and got his first on Saturday for the month of May.

The Black and Gold didn’t finish the half without answering back. In the 30th minute of the match, LAFC’s Mateusz Bogusz took the opportunity to strike toward the far post. Quakes’ goalkeeper JT Marcinkowski was able to block the shot but the ball bounced toward Denis Bouanga who followed up with an easy shot to the back of the net to equalize the match. The goal was Bouanga’s 14th of the 2023 MLS season across all competitions.

Sadly, LAFC went quiet in the second half of the match and were called on a penalty on Quakes forward Jeremy Ebobisse. Espinoza lined up with LAFC goalkeeper John McCarthy and landed a successful strike to give San Jose a 2-1 lead, which stood until the clock ran down.

As a result of Espinoza’s successful penalty kick in the 83rd minute, the defending MLS Cup Champions record now stands at 5-1-3 with 17 points. Losing to The Quakes in San Jose was LAFC’s fifth consecutive defeat against the Northern Californian club on the road.

Next up on the schedule are the Monterey Bay FC next Tuesday for the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.
