LAFC vs Austin FC Highlights

In a 1-2 defeat to ATX, Carlos Vela was able to secure his 100 combined goals and assists mark in the LAFC vs Austin FC match on Wednesday night. Vela became the third fastest player in MLS history to ever achieve this feat.

Austin FC’s Ruben Gabrielsen scored following a corner kick in the 13th minute where Jhojan Valencia was able to secure the ball and find the senior defender for the first goal of the match. This became the fifth time this season where ATX scored in the first 15 minutes of the match, a MLS-leading stat that’s tied with NYCFC.

In quest of an equalizer, LAFC believed they had a penalty call in second-half stoppage time when Austin FC defender Kipp Keller challenged Diego Palacios in his own area. The play was reviewed by Video Review, but the no-call on the field was confirmed.

LAFC seemed to manage well against the Verde and Black, and it wasn’t until the 80th minute where they gave up their second goal to Diego Fagundez up the left side of the field with a strike past LAFC goalkeeper Maxime Crépeau. Fagundez also had a good look early on in the 23’ but hit the crossbar.

Six minutes later, Vela was able to draw a penalty kick after ATX goalkeeper Brad Stuver fouled him inside the box. Vela converted his left-footed goal that juked Stuver to the opposite post. This was Vela’s first goal since March 20th versus the Vancouver Whitecaps.

ATXFC now reclaims top position in the MLS Western Conference as well as the Supporters’ Shield. LAFC falls down to second place in the Western Conference with a 7-3-2 record and 23 points. The Black and Gold will play once again this weekend against the Columbus Crew at Lower.com Field on Saturday, May 21.
