LAFC signs defender Giorgio Chiellini through 2023

Announced today, LAFC signs defender Giorgio Chiellini, 37, to a contract using Targeted Allocation Money (TAM) through next year. After ending his contract with Juventus, the Italian defender recently retired from the Italian national team and now joins the Black and Gold.

Having spent 17 years with Italian Serie A side Juventus FC, Chiellini led the Club with nine consecutive Serie A titles from 2011–2020. Chiellini was selected to the Italian League’s Team of the Year five times in a row from 2012–2018 and won Serie A Defender of the Year three times with five Italian Cups and five Italian Super Cups.

“Giorgio is a special, one-of-a-kind player and person,” said LAFC Co-President & General Manager John Thorrington as LAFC signs defender Giorgio Chiellini. “Signing Giorgio was a unique opportunity to improve our club. He will complement what we believe is already a strong team as every day he will set the right example with his leadership, competitiveness, and experience. He is a serial winner at the highest levels, and we are grateful he has chosen LAFC to join in our pursuit of trophies.”

“I felt very strongly about this new chapter in my career, and I am grateful to LAFC for this opportunity,” said the legendary Italian footballer. “I’m thankful for all my years with Juventus and I’m looking forward to winning many more trophies in Los Angeles.”

Chiellini made 117 appearances for Italy and helped the Azzurri win the 2020 European Championship while being named the tournament’s best defender. As a native of Pisa, Italy, Chiellini represented Italy in the 2010 and 2014 FIFA World Cups, scoring a total of eight goals and providing four assists during that time.

As LAFC signs defender Giorgio Chiellini, they will strengthen their back line along with the team’s mindset in the presence of the new vet. On the morning of Wednesday, June 29, LAFC will formally introduce Chiellini at a press conference at Banc of California Stadium.
