LAFC vs Vancouver Whitecaps – June 24, 2023

The Caps ended a stunning 15-game losing streak on the road as they finished 2-3 in the LAFC vs Vancouver Whitecaps game on Saturday. On the flip side, the Black and Gold lost for the third time at home at BMO Stadium this season.

Within the first 23 minutes of the match, both Ranko Veselinovic and Brian White of the Caps scored. The first came in the 2nd minute as Veselinovic cleaned up on a header following a corner kick. Moments later, Sergio Córdova turned it over to Ryan Gauld who found Brian White open on the opposite end for the header.

LAFC was able to get on the board late in the first half when Denis Bouanga found an opportunity to cut the lead in half after Steve Biuk and Ryan Hollingshead’s play got blocked by Caps goalkeeper Yohei Takaoka. Gauld ended up being a tremendous factor on all three goals for the Caps as he scored one of his own in the second half of the match to extend the lead to 3-1.

Carlos Vela scored his second goal in the last three games thanks to a good look from Mateusz Bogusz in the 68th minute and a well-timed gaffe by Veselinovic. The goal was Vela’s sixth for the season. Unfortunately, LAFC wasn’t able to equalize the scoreboard for the rest of the game.

“They had the right game plan for tonight,” said LAFC head coach Steve Cherundolo. “They made some plays and we made one too many errors. Anytime you concede three goals at home it’s hard to win, and in the end you don’t deserve it. We’ll recover from this, learn from it, and move forward.”

Now tied with St. Louis City SC for first place in the Western Conference, LAFC will get ready to suit up against FC Dallas on Saturday, July 1 at Toyota Stadium.
