LAFC vs Club América Highlights
The Black and Gold made their Leagues Cup debut during the LAFC vs Club América match on Wednesday night but the game resulted in a 0-0 draw and a 6-5 loss to América on penalty kicks. The match, which drew a crowd of 71,189 fans, was the second game of a doubleheader at Los Angeles’ SoFi Stadium.
The matches were the first-ever soccer matches to be held at the SoFi Stadium since its grand opening in 2020. Unfortunately, there was a lack of LAFC vs Club América highlights as the Black and Gold were unable to please the home crowd as their neighboring rivals did in their victory against Chivas.
As the first half came to a close, LAFC came dangerously close to losing a player when defender Mamadou Fall received a straight red card for a tackle on Club América forward Federico Vinas. After Video Review, referee Victor Rivas reversed his earlier ruling, allowing Fall to continue the game.
Although LAFC goalkeeper John McCarthy clutched a couple of saves, and strikers Latif Blessing and Kwadwo Opoku had some great looks at the net, neither side managed to score in regulation time. The only plays fitting enough to make the LAFC vs Club América highlights were the penalty kicks that followed.
In the first three rounds of the shootout, which was knotted at 5-5 entering the seventh round, each goalkeeper made one save. Club América’s Emilio Lara drilled his attempt past McCarthy for the sixth while LAFC midfielder José Cifuentes missed his shot over the crossbar to give the Liga MX team the victory.
It was a decent showing for LAFC’s first-ever effort in the Leagues Cup, but we all would’ve preferred the W. LAFC’s all-time record versus Liga MX clubs was 2-2-0 before this evening’s stalemate. All of those contests took place in the 2020 Concacaf Champions League, which included a triumph over Club America in the semifinals.
