LAFC vs LA Galaxy – May 23, 2023

In a 2-0 shutout at BMO Stadium, the LAFC vs LA Galaxy El Tráfico matchup in the 2023 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup resulted in a loss for the Black and Gold. The LA Galaxy now advances to the Quarterfinals of the tournament.

The scoreboard was unaltered during the first half of the match, and it wasn’t until the 49th minute where LA Galaxy drew first blood. Forward Tyler Boyd took a cut and shot a left footed goal from the top of the penalty box and into the far corner of the net past LAFC goalkeeper Eldin Jakupovic.

Galaxy midfielder Ricard Puig picked up the second goal of the match to extend his team’s lead following a play where he went full send, crossing the halfway line and through three LAFC defenders, and chipped in his first goal in U.S. Open Cup play. That’ll do Puig, that’ll do.

The LAFC youngsters were not able to bounce back from the two goal deficit, especially due to the defense by Galaxy goalkeeper Jonathan Klinsmann who recorded six saves in the shutout. Throughout five career U.S. Open Cup games for the Galaxy, Klinsmann now has a record of 4-1-0 and two shutouts.

This was the 19th episode of El Tráfico in history across all competitions. The LA Galaxy continues to lead in the series with a 8-6-5 record, holding a 6-4-5 record in league play, a 0-2-0 record in the MLS Cup Playoffs and a 2-0-0 record in the U.S. Open Cup.

Now we’ll just twiddle our thumbs until the next episode of El Tráfico, which is set for Tuesday, July 4 on Independence Day.
