In dramatic fashion, LAFC wins 2022 Supporters Shield in Week 32

LAFC wins 2022 Supporters Shield after a thrilling 2-1 victory over the Portland Timbers. The Black and Gold are now officially the champions of the 2022 MLS regular season, holding off a late season surge from the Philadelphia Union.

The Union lost in a huge upset to Charlotte FC on Saturday, which paved the way as LAFC wins 2022 Supporters Shield in their away game against the Portland Timbers on Sunday at Providence Park. Following a score from Carlos Vela early in the second half of the match, newcomer Denis Bouanga secured his first ever goal in MLS history with a stoppage time score to give LAFC the edge.

This summer, it seemed as though LAFC was the subject of the MLS offseason. The club signed center back Giorgio Chiellini from Juventus and forward Gareth Bale from Real Madrid. Along with re-signing captain Carlos Vela to a Designated Player contract, they also signed forward Denis Bouanga.

LAFC also sought out players with MLS experience. That strategy was exemplified by the acquisition of goalkeeper Maxime Crepeau, defender Ryan Hollingshead, and midfielders such as Ilie Sanchez and Kellyn Acosta. Left back Diego Palacios, midfielder Jose Cifuentes, and forward Cristian Arango have also made a huge impact in 2022.

As LAFC wins 2022 Supporters Shield, they have secured home field advantage going into the Audi 2022 MLS Cup Playoffs. This marks the second time in LAFC’s history where they have won the Supporters’ Shield, and the club will play in the upcoming 2023 Scotiabank Concacaf Champions League.

Head coach Steve Cherundolo’s club has had a fantastic MLS season, and it hasn’t even ended yet: There’s still the Decision Day finale at home against Nashville SC next week.
