LAFC re-signs forward Carlos Vela through the 2023 season

Aye aye, captain—LAFC re-signs forward Carlos Vela as a Designated Player “at least” through 2023. Since Vela’s current contract was scheduled to end on June 30, many thought that he may have returned to Spain.

Vela was the league’s most valuable player in 2019 and he currently holds the record for the most goals scored in a single season. El Capitán also leads the LAFC with six goals and three assists this season across 15 games.

“Carlos has been an integral piece of LAFC’s success on and off the field since the beginning,” said LAFC Co-President & General Manager John Thorrington as LAFC re-signs forward Carlos Vela. “Carlos has proved that he is one of the top players this league has ever seen, and we are thrilled to have him continue to lead our Club as we attempt to win more trophies this season and beyond.”

Vela, 33, has been a member of LAFC as the first player in the Club’s history. and since the team started competing in 2018 for its inaugural season. Named the Landon Donovan 2019 MLS MVP after playing the best individual season in league history, Vela led the Black and Gold to a Supporters’ Shield title that same year. In 93 regular season appearances, he has recorded 61 goals and 37 assists.

“Los Angeles is a special place for me and my family. This is our home, and I am excited to continue my career here at LAFC,” said Vela. “My goal is to win the MLS Cup with LAFC, and I will work hard to achieve our goal, and I expect to continue to achieve great things for the Club, my family, our fans and the City of Los Angeles.”

As LAFC re-signs forward Carlos Vela, we can all take a sigh of relief that everything has been signed, sealed, delivered. Although limited the past two seasons, Vela seems to have recovered 100% while scoring six goals and dishing out six assists in 16 games played this season.
