LAFC hires Giorgio Chiellini and will remain as part of the Club

Announced today, LAFC hires Giorgio Chiellini as Player Development Coach and will work with LAFC head coach Steve Cherundolo as well as the coaching staff. Chiellini played with the Black and Gold for two seasons between 2022 and 2023.

“We were thankful to have Giorgio play the final 18 months of his playing career with LAFC,” said LAFC Co-President & GM John Thorrington as LAFC hires Giorgio Chiellini. “During that time he proved what an asset he is for LAFC in a number of ways, and we are excited to add a truly brilliant football mind, incredible leader and an even better person to our staff for the upcoming season.”

The legendary Chiellini concluded his incredible 22-year playing career last December. As one of the most honored and well-liked defenders in sports history, he retired after assisting LAFC to the MLS Cup Final.

In 2022, Chiellini made his way to LAFC from Juventus FC where he had an incredible career for nearly eighteen years. There, he helped the team to nine championship runs from 2011 to 2020. In addition to being the three-time Serie A Defender of the Year, Chiellini won five Italian Cups and five Italian Super Cups and was selected to the Italian League’s Team of the Year five times in a row from 2012 to 2018.

As part of LAFC, Chiellini played across 45 games and started in 28. He made seven MLS Cup Playoff appearances, three 2023 Leagues Cup appearances, and played in the 2023 Concacaf Champions League.

In addition to the 2022 MLS Cup, Chiellini assisted in leading the Black & Gold to two Western Conference titles in 2022 and 2023, the 2022 Supporters’ Shield, and two runner-up spots in the 2023 MLS Cup, 2023 Campeones Cup, and 2023 Concacaf Champions League.

As LAFC hires Giorgio Chiellini, the Black and Gold now gain arguably the best defensive coach in football. He will for sure strengthen their modern center-back role going forward.
