LAFC Acquire Sebastien Ibeagha, Defender From NYCFC

It’s official, LAFC acquire Sebastien Ibeagha today in a trade with New York City FC. Ibeagha, a 6’ 2” defender from New York City FC, was received in exchange for $150,000 in General Allocation Money (GAM). NYCFC will receive an additional $50,000 in GAM if certain conditions are met.

In 2017, Sebastien Ibeagha was the USL Defender of the Year with the San Antonio FC and was named to the USL All-League First Team. He joined NYCFC in 2018 and made 26 appearances with 18 starts and played 1,717 minutes. Ibeagha made 11 starts in 23 MLS regular season games for NYCFC in 2019, surpassing the 1,000-minute milestone for the second consecutive season.

With Eddie Segura out for the season and 2021 MLS All-Star selection Jesus David Murillo treating his hamstring, LAFC is low on central defense. On the NYCFC depth chart, Sebastien Ibeagha fell behind James Sands, an All-Star and Gold Cup champion with the US men’s national team.

NYCFC sporting director David Lee stated in a release, “Seb has been a really valuable member of our squad since joining in 2018 and he played a vital role both on and off the pitch for our organization and he will be sincerely missed. He’s been a dependable presence in our defense and his influence in the locker room and throughout the community embodied the values we want our players to have. We wish him all the best at LAFC and throughout the rest of his career.”

LAFC acquire Sebastien Ibeagha, 29, after making 64 total MLS appearances for New York City FC up to 2021. Ibeagha has appeared in eight games this season, starting two and logging 348 minutes.
