LAFC vs Vancouver Whitecaps FC – November 3, 2024
Game 2 of the LAFC vs Vancouver Whitecaps FC match ended in a 3-0 loss for the Black and Gold. Ryan Gauld gave Vancouver the lead in the tenth minute, recording his fifth goal of the playoffs. LAFC committed two own goals, and yes, you read that right.
Following a number of deflections, Gauld found the back of the net to put his team up 1-0 early on in the game. Just three minutes following the first goal, LAFC’s Ryan Hollingshead deflected a cross by Gauld, but this time around the ball went into LAFC’s own goal, doubling Vancouver’s lead. LAFC was only limited to three shots at goal in the first half.
LAFC came out of the halftime break guns blazing, but Vancouver Whitecaps FC goalkeeper Yohei Takaoka held off the Black and Gold as he denied Denis Bouanga, Mateusz Bogusz, and Oliver Giroud to record a clean sheet. For the record, Bouanga had scored in five of his last six playoff games, three of which were against the Whitecaps. His closest opportunity to score was during the 67th minute of the match but Tanaoka made a tremendous save.
Adding salt to the wound, LAFC’s Eddie Segura also made an own goal in the 68th minute to put the Whitecaps up 3-0. The loss was LAFC’s first ever in a Round One Best-of-3 Series. LAFC also have never lost an MLS Playoff game against a Western Conference club since the First round of the 2020 MLS Cup Playoffs versus the Seattle Sounders FC.
The loss also breaks a seven game win streak for LAFC that dates back to the U.S. Open Cup Final in which they defeated Sporting Kansas City.
The decisive Game 3 of this series will kick off at BMO Stadium on Friday, November 8. Fingers crossed.
