LAFC vs Seattle Sounders – November 24, 2024
In a 2-1 stoppage time loss, the LAFC vs Seattle Sounders match on Saturday night at BMO Stadium went in the favor of the Emerald City. Another own goal by LAFC was the difference maker in hindsight, allowing Seattle to advance to the Western Conference Final.
In the 50th minute of the match, LAFC midfielder Eduard Atuesta found Mateusz Bogusz at the right corner of the penalty box where he then saw Ryan Hollingshead waving down for the open look. With a right footed strike, Hollingshead drew first blood and recorded his fifth playoff goal of his MLS career.
Up 1-0, LAFC made a big mistake only nine minutes following Hollingshead’s score due to an own goal that was deflected by Maxime Chanot. Seattle Sounders’ Obed Vargas took a shot from the right side of the box that slowly rolled toward Chanot who awkwardly tapped it through the left side of LAFC goalkeeper Hugo Lloris. It was also alarming that Lloris didn’t even budge, as the possession felt so slow, yet quickly equalized the match and swung the pendulum toward Seattle’s side.
The game would then be tied into extra time. LAFC did outshoot Seattle 9 to 1 in the first 15 minutes, but the defense of Sounders goalkeeper Stefan Frei was as tight as ever, saving all nine attempts at goal. It was then at minute 109 where Sounders forward Jordan Morris made the biggest play for his hometown club, drilling a shot through Lloris’ left and sending his team to their first Western Conference Championship appearance since 2020.
Entering as the top seed in the Western conference for the second time in a row in the past three seasons, LAFC’s loss was surely more bitter than sweet this time around. The club had played 50 games across all competitions this year, finishing with a 31-11-8 record.
On the other end, Seattle claimed their first victory against LAFC in the last 11 games. The Emerald City strikers also did the same back in 2019 when they defeated the Black and Gold in the Western Conference Championship.
