LAFC vs Philadelphia Union – May 2, 2023

The Black and Gold came out with a W once again Tuesday night at BMO Stadium following the 3-0 win in the LAFC vs Philadelphia Union matchup in the second leg of the Concacaf Champions League Semifinal. Winning on a 4-1 aggregate, LAFC now advance to the finals of the CCL.

Midfielder Timothy Tillman struck first blood going into the 13th minute of the match when he rebounded on a block by Philadelphia goalkeeper Andre Blake. Ilie Sanchez initially attempted a header after a corner kick but Blake ricocheted it right into Tillman who was at the right place at the right time. The goal was Tillman’s first goal in the competition.

Just ten minutes later, LAFC goalkeeper John McCarthy saved a shot from Philadelphia Union’s Daniel Gazdag. McCarthy was able to obtain his fourth clean sheet across six Champions Leagues matches this year. LAFC then held the lead well into the second half of the match, and even doubled it when Kwadwo Opoku scored in the 82nd minute.

To top it all off, Denis Bouanga found an opportunity of his own just minutes after Opoku’s goal on a 1v1 against Blake to bring the lead up to 3-0. Jose Cifuentes was credited with the assist.

LAFC will now enter their second Champions League Final in the last four years, and will face off against either Tigres UANL or Leon from Mexico’s Liga MX. Losing to the Tigres in 2020, the Black and Gold are on the quest for redemption.
