LAFC vs Philadelphia Union Highlights

LAFC demonstrated the firepower they became known for in 2019 against the Philadelphia Union on Sunday night. Unfortunately for the home side, though, it was just barely enough to keep pace.

The night kicked off with a left-footed curler out of nowhere from Sergio Santos in the 29th minute.

Vela quickly equalized with free kick from just outside the top of the box. As Atuesta proved last season, he too can be lethal from that spot. With both standing over free kicks now, opposing keepers have to honor both potential shooters. Andre Blake was stuck unable to see where the ball was going to come from.

The moment of the night came just after the half, when Union center back Jakob Glesnes lined up to take a free kick from 35+ yards out and was very clearly intending to shoot. Glesnes took a long run up and smashed a pile driver of a shot that wobbled and bent and picked up speed until it hammered into the back of the helpless Vermeer’s net.

Straight after the restart Rossi found himself peeling from the left across the box with the ball curling off his right foot. Bang. 2-2.

Both sides would scrap their way to one more goal. For Philadelphia, the draw represents a confidence boosting away result for a young team against the reigning Supporters Shield winners.

The home side won’t feel quite the same.

LAFC will hope to plug up some of their defensive leaks before they host Liga MX side Cruz Azul in the first leg of the CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinals in 72 hours.
