HIGHLIGHTS | LAFC vs Loudoun United FC – 5/21/24

LAFC vs Loudoun United FC – May 21, 2024

The LAFC vs Loudoun United FC matchup on Tuesday at BMO Stadium was the first ever meeting between the two clubs as they competed in the 2024 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, the country’s oldest ongoing national soccer competition. Timothy Tillman, Cristian Olivera, and Tomas Angel all scored a goal each in the 3-0 shutout victory.

The match was a single-elimination affair in the Round of 16, with the winner advancing to the U.s. Open Cup quarterfinals on either July 9 or July 10, with the final on September 25. Although the game marked Loudoun’s second trip to California this year, the outcome was entirely different from their 2-1 victory in Irvine against Orange County SC in the Round of 32.

Staying hot, the Black and Gold immediately went on the board in the 8th minute of the LAFC vs Loudoun United FC match when Denis Bouanga found Tillman on a low cross. Tillman’s initial shot was blocked but Olivera found a way to deliver it back to him and was credited with the assist.

Olivera himself was able to double the lead in the 52nd minute when Bouanga led the 50-yard break and passed the ball to Olivera at the far side for a right footed strike through Loudoun goalkeeper Dane Jacomen and into the back of the net. Just moments after, Bouanga found Angel cutting into the inside corner of the penalty area. Angel then placed a left footed strike just outside of the goal area to extend LAFC’s lead to 3-0.

Bouanga nearly scored a goal of his own on LAFC’s very next possession but the ball was luckily blocked off the line that seemed to pass through Jacomen.

That’s all she wrote for the LAFC vs Loudoun United FC highlights. The Black and Gold will move onto the quarterfinals in July but will first face off against Atlanta United on Saturday, May 25. LUFC will stay on the road for their next USL match against Orange County SC.
