LAFC vs LA Galaxy – July 4, 2024
The LAFC vs LA Galaxy Independence Day showdown extended LAFC’s winning streak to 12 games as the Black and Gold defeated their hometown rivals 2-1 in front of 70,076 fans on Thursday night at the Rose Bowl. Thanks to Kei Kamara and Denis Bouanga, the two scored a goal each to give LAFC their third straight victory over LA Galaxy.
The attendance count was the second highest across all competitions in the MLS this season. Only the Inter Miami vs Sporting Kansas City match on April 13 at Arrowhead Stadium had surpassed it, with 72,610 attendees. With that said, last year’s July 4th episode of El Tráfico recorded 82,110 attended at the Rose Bowl.
With a corner kick by Mateusz Bogusz in the 39th minute of the match, the ball landed at the top of Kamara’s head who drilled the header past Galaxy goalkeeper John McCarthy. The goal was Kamara’s third of the 2024 MLS season, and marked the 147th regular season goal of his career.
Prior to the end of the first half, LAFC’s Eduard Atuesta got tripped up in the penalty area by Galaxy defender Julian Aude. A penalty kick was awarded to the Black and Gold, who selected none other than Denis Bouanga to extend the lead to 2-0 by drilling a right footer past his former teammate McCarthy.
LA Galaxy gained momentum early in the second half and were able to put themselves on the board when Miki Yamade caused a stir inside the penalty area. Galaxy’s Gabriel Pec was able to secure the ball aside Yamade and struck one quickly past LAFC goalkeeper Hugo Lloris.
In all competitions, this was the 23rd encounter between LAFC and LA Galaxy. With victories in the last three meetings, LAFC is currently 9-9-5 across those competitions. The win marked the first time that either club has won three matches in a row within the series.
LAFC will travel to Texas for a matchup against the Houston Dynamo on Sunday, July 7.
