LAFC vs Colorado Rapids Highlights

In just their second loss of the season, the Black and Gold weren’t able to hold their lossless streak in the LAFC vs Colorado Rapids match on Saturday afternoon at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park. The Colorado Rapids scored twice in the first half off of penalty kicks and eventually shut out LAFC who still remain in first place in the Western Conference with 23 points.

Colorado’s Gyasi Zardes put the first score on the board in the 17th minute on a PK after LAFC’s Sebastien Ibeagha kicked Diego Rubio in the head with his right foot. A shot to the back of the net past goalkeeper John McCarthy set the Rapids’ lead to 1-0.

McCarthy made some good saves throughout the half, but the Rapids were awarded another penalty kick in the 24th minute when Video Review revealed McCarthy had left his line too early on a PK by Diego Rubio. Rubio’s second chance was successful, and increased the deficit to 2-0.

Keeping his instincts in check, McCarthy put out a great effort for the rest of the match while continuing to make great saves. His reactions were spot on, closing in on shots from Colorado’s Jonathan Lewis, Gyasi Zardes, and Auston Trusty. Unfortunately on the offensive end, the Black and Gold just couldn’t get things going.

The two penalties on LAFC’s end really hurt them for the rest of the match, and the VAR even seemed to frustrate some players. For the record, the two penalties to Colorado ended a streak of an MLS record of 46 straight matches without giving up a penalty, which dates all the way back to November 2020. Also, the last time LAFC went scoreless was last season in August versus Atlanta.

Thankfully, the next matchup will be at home for the Black and Gold on Wednesday, May 18 against Austin FC.
