LAFC vs Colorado Rapids Highlights
In a tough matchup between LAFC vs Colorado Rapids, the Black & Gold fell short on Sunday in a 5-2 loss and were eliminated from playoff contention. With the win, the Colorado Rapids placed first seed of the Western Conference in the Audi 2021 MLS Cup Playoffs.
In the 18th minute, Colorado’s Kellyn Acosta crossed the ball over to Jonathan Lewis who took a clean strike right past LAFC goalkeeper Jamal Blackman for a 1-0 lead. Later in the half, Colorado’s Collen Warner shot directly at Blackman after a corner kick and the ball was deflected into the net. Just to note, Warner has not made a goal since March 2017.
The bleeding wouldn’t stop there as Lewis came back in the second half for a brace at the 53’, making it his first multi-goal game in over two years. Colorado’s Diego Rubio was able to steal the ball away from LAFC’s Mamadou Fall and quickly pass to Lewis, who finished the ball past Blackman once again to set the match to 3-0.
Just a couple minutes afterward, Cristian Arango found an opportunity to put the ball into the back of the net for LAFC’s first goal of the match. Colorado’s Cole Bassett answered back at the 63rd minute with a laser shot toward the far post.
Later on both teams traded a goal each, one from LAFC’s Brian Rodiriguez who deflected a shot off Rapids’ goalkeeper William Yarbrough. Then Dominique Badji from the Rapids caught a long cross from Steven Beitashour and shot the ball off Blackman and into the net for the nail in the coffin for the LAFC.
There would have been so much built up momentum for LAFC if they had defeated the Rapids. We have to give credit where credit is due, as Robin Fraser has done an amazing job getting his team to first place this 2021 season in the Western Conference and playoff appearances in two consecutive years. As for LAFC, there will be a number of concerns going into the offseason.
