LAFC vs Austin FC Highlights
The Black and Gold suffered their second straight loss in the LAFC vs Austin FC nationally televised match on Friday. Only scoring one goal, LAFC came up short in the 4-1 loss on the road. The good news is that the club still keeps their six point lead in the Western Conference.
In their second meet this MLS season, these two top teams in the Western Conference faced off at Q2 Stadium. Austin FC drew first blood in the 32nd minute following a foul by LAFC’s Eddie Segura and AFC’s Diego Fagúndez’ free kick outside the 18-yard box. The ball flew right over the head of LAFC goalkeeper Maxime Crépeau into the back of the net.
Right at the start of the second half, The Oaks didn’t seem like they lost any of the momentum that could’ve been cleared from the break. They went on to score three consecutive goals in the first 15 minutes starting with Maximiliano Urruti’s brace in the 47’ and 51’. His first was a header that was assisted by Nick Lima. His second goal came off a fast break through two LAFC defenders following a pass from Fagúndez. Urruti’s left-footed strike on an off-angle put Austin in a 3-0 lead.
The bleeding wouldn’t stop as Sebastian Driussi, with a league leading 19 goals, secured a shot in the 59th minute to the far post for the fourth goal of the match. Fagúndez added another assist on the play. Shortly after, LAFC finally made it on the board thanks to Cristian Arango and José Cifuentes. Initially, Cifu’s shot was ricocheted off by Austin goalkeeper Brad Stuver, but the ball landed directly to Chicho who secured the goal with a swift kick.
LAFC still stands in first place in the Supporters’ Shield rankings and is on track to surpass New England Revolution’s record of 73 MLS points last season. On Wednesday, August 31, LAFC will play its last of three road games against the Houston Dynamo at PNC Stadium.
