LAFC vs Atlanta United – May 25, 2024
The Black and Gold completed a 1-0 shutout in the LAFC vs Atlanta United victory on Saturday, marking the club’s sixth’s shutout this 2024 MLS season, along with LAFC goalkeeper Hugo Lloris’ fifth clean sheet this year. Could you believe that over the past 394 minutes on the field, LAFC has not given up a goal? Simply astounding.
The road victory also marked LAFC’s 100th win in club history, which tied the post-shootout era record of 100 wins in the least amount of games played with 206. The record was first set by the Seattle Sounders in 2015. In another surprising feat, the win against Atlanta United was LAFC’s first ever against the Five Stripes at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
Following a defense-filled, scoreless first half, Atlanta United goalkeeper Brad Guzan deliberately tripped up Mateusz Bogusz after ricocheting the ball right into the head of the LAFC attacking midfielder. Although both players seemed hurt, it was Guzan who received a red card on the final decision of the play. Bogusz took full advantage of the situation and scored his free kick with a right-footed strike. Karma always has its own way of taking care of everything.
LAFC maintained the lead throughout the game, and Lloris now has the third-longest streak amongst all LAFC goalkeepers in history for shutouts with 301 minutes recorded. The last time Lloris conceded a goal was earlier this month against the San Jose Earthquakes.
Although Atlanta had 54% possession for the entire match and outshot 15-14 against LAFC, the Black and Gold came out on top on a much needed win on the road. Next up are the Minnesota United on Wednesday, May 29.
