LAFC acquires free agent goalkeeper Jamal Blackman

Earlier today LAFC announced the signing of Jamal Blackman, a 6’6” goalkeeper who is a product of Chelsea FC and spent the 2020-21 season with Rotherham United of the English Championship making all 28 appearances. Blackman, 27, joins Tomás Romero and Pablo Sisniega as the goalkeepers for the Black & Gold.

Blackman follows Los Angeles Galaxy’s Jonathon Bond and Tottenham Hotspur FC’s Brandon Austin as the latest goalkeeper to come from England to join Major League Soccer. Blackman’s contract runs through 2021 with options through the following year in 2022.

Since 2016, Jamal Blackman has been loaned out by Chelsea to six different clubs including Wycombe Wanderers, Sheffield United, Leeds United, Vitesse, Bristol Rover, and Rotherham United. He has represented England at the U16, U17, and U19 levels and was victorious in the annual football tournament “Victory Shield” in 2009.

GM and Co-President John Thorrington said, “Jamal is a talented goalkeeper and an important addition to the Club. We look forward to welcoming him and are confident that he will prove to be a great fit with his skills and experience.”

At the time of this signing, LAFC are currently trailing in 9th place in the Western Conference with 27 points in 22 matches.
