LAFC Forward Diego Rossi Wins ESPY For Best MLS Player

On July 10 at the 2021 ESPY Awards in Los Angeles, LAFC forward Diego Rossi wins ESPY for Best MLS Player. Rossi won the honor in a fan vote over Alejandro Pozuelo, Andre Blake, and Lucas Zelarayan, becoming the first LAFC player to do so.

Rossi earned the MLS Golden Boot in 2020 for becoming the youngest player in Major League Soccer history to lead the league in goals scored (14 in 19 games). The ESPY Award celebrates his remarkable season.

In addition, Diego Rossi was named the MLS Young Player of the Year for 2020, commemorating him as the league’s best player aged 22 and under. He also earned five individual awards in 2020 including The Golden Boot at the MLS Is Back Tournament, the Young Player of the Tournament, and selection to the tournament’s Best XI.

Currently, the Uruguayan National Team member leads the team with four goals in 2021. Since 2018, Rossi has scored a total of 46 goals with 20 assists in 95 games. He was also the one who scored LAFC’s first goal ever back on April 29, 2018, when they defeated the Seattle Sounders 1-0 at CenturyLink Field.

On the other side of the spectrum, Julie Ertz (Chicago Re Stars) won the ESPY for Best NWSL Player while Sam Mewis (USA National Team, Manchester City) won the ESPY for Best International Athlete, Women’s Soccer.
